SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the science of getting your website or blog on the first page of Google Search for specific search terms. In this article, I would like to cover the basic SEO practices for newbies to implement in their posts and pages.
Each page that you create should be optimized for a single keyword in order for search engines to understand clearly what the page or post is about. If there are too many keywords used, they get confused and can’t decide where to list your content. When you know the topic of your page or your blog post the first thing to do is to research the keyword to use.
There are two kinds of keywords or key phrases: short or long. When the keyword contains only one or two words, even three, it is considered a short keyword. If I take the phrase “SEO practices” or “basic SEO”, it is short, and consequently there is lots of traffic, but also competition to rank a page with this kind of keyword. It is then better for us to use a long tail keyword like “Basic SEO Practices for Newbies”, which will bring less traffic, but also much less competition, leaving us with more targeted visitors and buyers.
Basic SEO Practices for Newbies – Keyword Research
How do you find your keyword?
There are different methods, but the simplest is to use the Google Search suggestion tool. This tool only suggests keywords that people are searching for so the goal is to pick a long tail keyword that is related to the topic you are writing about. We assume that this tool shows keywords with a reasonable volume of searches.
For this blog post this is how I did it:
As I wanted to write a blog post about basic SEO for beginners, I started to type “basic SEO” in the Google Search window.
It showed me a few options as you can see. I added the word “for”…
…and it showed me a selection of long tail keywords that are searched monthly to choose from.
As I continued to play around, I decided to replace “bloggers” by “newbies”.
I then decided to use the long tail keyword: Basic SEO Practices for Newbies.
I don’t know what exactly is the search volume for this keyword, but it doesn’t matter.
Basic SEO Practices for Newbies – On Site
First of all your content should be of quality and relevant to your audience. If your site is filled with junk articles, you will never be able to rank well. Then, adopt good SEO practices and you’ll be on your way to tons of traffic.
As a general rule of thumb, you have to include your keyword inside the title and in the first paragraph of the content. Whenever possible, bold, italicize and underline the keyword that you are targeting. Try to keep a keyword density of maximum 2% and include an image with your keyword as alternative text.
The next step would be to get quality back-links and interaction on the site with comments and social media shares. The more you get of these the better as your site will be referred to as an “authority site”.
Make your website become the authority site by adopting these basic SEO practices for newbies.
